1.3 trillion dollars lost?

Everywhere I look today the news says the markets 'lost 1.3 trillion dollars in value yesterday".

Let's be truthful--  stock value is FUTURE value, not present.  If it was present and real, then we should be able to have a 100% sell-off and the value of the stocks should go right into the pockets of their former owners in cash.

If the value was real, that would happen.

But in reality, begin a full sell-off like that, and the price of every share not yet sold will drop and drop and drop, until the last 20% or so cannot get a nickel for millions of dollars in 'value'.

WALL STREET VALUE IS NOT REAL.

Because if it is in stocks, its value is not yet 'realised', or MADE real, by selling it.

We did not lose 1.3 trillion dollars yesterday.  That was future value, paper value, which nobody could spend.

Markets are FUTURES markets, not bank accounts with cash equivalents in them.  Loss in market value of stocks is NOT like burning the same amount of paper money.

Just to be clear.

P. J.'s news

The very funny and delightful P. J. O'Rourke announces in his own entertaining way that he has cancer.

Not the 'put your affairs in order and spend more time with your family' kind, but the 'something has to be cut out from somewhere no blade should go' kind.

Read it all, but here's my favorite part--

Death is so important that God visited death upon his own son, thereby helping us learn right from wrong well enough that we may escape death forever and live eternally in God's grace. (Although this option is not usually open to reporters.)

While that last part is, like all comedy, funny because there's truth to it, the careful Christian in me wants to be sure there are no misunderstandings; O'Rourke is wrong about the reason God visited death upon His own Son.

It wasn't 'helping us learn right from wrong well enough" to escape judgment.  We already know right from wrong, and we still do wrong and don't apologize to Him for it.  Feeling guilty isn't the same as repenting.

Jesus died in order to PAY THE PRICE for OUR sins, so that (if we believe and accept His gift) God can look upon us as WITHOUT SIN, therefore deserving of Heaven.  It wasn't to make us better people, it was to bridge the unbridgeable gap between imperfect and Perfect.  And it centers upon our accepting it, not on our general moral behavior.  It's about faith.

A true Christian can always be recognized by the fact that his or her life has changed, that moral decisions are now better, that sinful behavior is now less.  But this part is a CONSEQUENCE of accepting the gift of Christ, not an effort to 'win God over'.  He's already on our side.

Unless you're a reporter.  :-)

To erase any doubt....

The media is totally in the tank for Obama.

Now the people in that business who continue to have a conscience are reporting on the reporters, off the record of course, and here's a classic example over at Instapundit.

A team of four from that newsroom dumpster-diving in Alaska to find dirt on Sarah, but nobody investigating ANYTHING about Obama's chequered past.  Cheers from the newsroom when a Palin-mocking piece is aired on any network.

Sickening.

If we were like them, we'd be doing a Bill Ayers and bombing the offices of these newspapers.

Lucky for us, bombing them isn't necessary, because the stock prices and readership numbers are already bombing.

good thing I wasn't holding my breath

I'd be long dead if I was holding my breath until the stories broke about all the oil spills in the Gulf because of Hurricane Ike.

Over a dozen operating platforms, that is to say pumping stations, were destroyed by Ike.

Anyone heard anything about oil spills?

Anyone?  Anyone?

Modern technology is such that the old bogeyman of oil spills is 99% ancient history.  When sea floor piping and valves are broken, they seal themselves.  No more leaks.

In California, there is more oil hitting the beaches from sea floor SEEPAGE than from production.

And that's seepage because of excess pressure, which could be RELIEVED by oil drilling.

If 'environmentalism' is the main line of argument against drilling offshore, that's OVER.  Ike has proven them wrong.

Yet another story you won't hear on the mainstream media.

every day, it just gets worse

Good God Almighty, save us from perfidious weasels and thieves who pretend to be leaders.

I just found out yesterday that, during all the time Barney Frank was so vigorously defending Fannie Mae from accusations that it was poorly run, he was enjoying a LIVE IN GAY LOVER who was a Fannie Mae employee, named Herb Moses.  Lived with BF for TEN YEARS.

Can you say CONFLICT OF INTEREST?

Now today I've learned that the nasty, rude and wildly anti-Bush CNN reporter David Gregory is married to a woman who was the EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT AND GENERAL COUNSEL OF FANNIE MAE UNTIL LAST WEEK!

She resigned on September 19th.

WHY DIDN"T WE KNOW THIS?

We already know that, in roughly the same position, Jamie Gorelick made $26 million during roughly six years, until 2003.  We know that Raines and Johnson each made almost $100 million, if not more, with cooked books that led to undeserved bonuses which even now are not being paid back to the taxpayers who now own the debt.  Johnson and Raines should be in jail, maybe Gorelick.  IF Enron executives can be broke and in jail, so too should these people.

HOW MUCH MONEY DID DAVID GREGORY'S WIFE MAKE OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS?

How many millions of dollars does David Gregory enjoy, courtesy of his secret family connection to the Democrat party corruption at Fannie Mae?  And how is it that Gregory can stand in front of cameras pretending to speak as a neutral pursuer of fact who maintains government transparency for the sake of the people, the watchdog, the fourth branch, yada yada, when he's actually gaining substantial amounts of wealth by sharing in the corruption he's protecting through his silence?

The left enjoys making fun of 'inbred southerners, rednecks, NRA types".  The more I find out about those people, the more I think THEY are the ones who are inbred and incestuous.

This is the kind of discovery that makes me seriously want to just stop working, stop making any kind of income, so I never have to pay another dime in taxes.  I'm seriously considering begging in the street.  Showing up at a homeless shelter.  Screw 'em.  Let someone else pay for their parties and laughter.

It also makes me seriously want to take a bus trip to Washington and start looking for people to punch.  I am PHYSICALLY angry now, ready to hurt someone.  I do not enjoy being this way, but the more I learn the madder I get.  Mr. Gregory might be a handsome and imposing 6'5" (earning the Bush sobriquet "Stretch"), but I"m only an inch shorter and a good deal more massive.  Give me ONE SHOT at him.  I'll stand by Dana Perino in the press room, and when Gregory gets up and mouths off, that's it.

A man can dream, can't he?  :-)

They've been laughing at us all these years, skimming the cream off the top of the nation's wealth, producing NOTHING, accomplishing NOTHING, only having lawn parties and drinking Manhattans and laughing at the rubes who just show up for work every day and pay taxes-- they're blaming you and me for the problems of the world, problems they created to enrich themselves at our expense.

There is an ever growing list of people I am now praying will BURN FOR ETERNITY.

UPDATE*****************************

Someone I am close to, who is an HR person at a big company and knows where on the web to look, reports that Beth Wilkinson's annual compensation was over $2 million, and she's made a few big bonuses too, so it is safe to say that since December '05 when her appointment was announced, Beth Wilkinson Gregory has brought home to the Gregory household over $10 million.

More debt the taxpayers now own.

Time to get it back.

A new low, even for Gore

The former Vice President of the United States has now sunk so low as to encourage mobs to disrupt government backed utility projects from building electric plants to feed future demand for electricity.

"civil disobedience' is what he calls it, but the leftish mobs have a tradition of loosely interpreting this phrase and doubtless will do so here.

Looks like the construction workers are going to have to take out Baghdad-style insurance for a dangerous job, not the construction part but the mob-confronting part.

As some wit has said, in a couple of generations the documentaries of this time will be saying in somber voices, 'nobody believed it could happen here'.

Debate I

McCain had SO many missed opportunities.  But he did well overall.

Obama did not stumble in any obvious way.

In my view, without excessive analysis, this debate did not change a single mind across the nation.  Those who liked Obama for leftish reasons were happy, and those who liked McCain's experience and honor were pleased at how much that showed.

I fear the nation has grown old with McCain, and that young people have no idea what it means when McCain says "I saw three letters, K G B" in Putin's eyes.  When the wit said "those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it", he was talking about the young.  The left has owned education in the country for decades, and most of the important conflict-related foreign affairs history of recent decades is no longer properly taught.  America is, to put it frankly, the bad guy in modern schoolbooks.

I have been to the Lubyanka and felt the fear, pain, suffering and bleak death of the place just by standing there.  Today it's an innocuous Russian bureaucratic office building.  Young people have no idea about what the KGB did.  Dzerzhinsky Square was the black hole of evil in the modern universe a few decades ago.  The Lubyanka rises eight stories above the square but drops more than ten stories below, where the cells and torture chambers were.  Below ground, so the screams could not be heard.  And while he did not go to Lubyanka, McCain knows a little about their style, taught to the Cong during Soviet support of that side in the Vietnam war.  Putin, too, knows what happened in the Lubyanka.  Unfortunately, he was not a captive but a captor there.

McCain's experiences made him, and they qualified him for leadership.  Too many young people do NOT understand why this is true.

This election as much as any other is about the young vs. the old.

Side note--  I found myself deeply aggravated at Obama's "I would send two or three brigades to Afghanistan", as if Obama has any more than ZERO experience and understanding of what our military does.  It seemed to me presumptuous in the extreme.

Also, 'tax cut for 95% of working families" includes about half that number who pay no taxes at all.  What is a tax cut for people who don't pay taxes?  It's a wealth redistribution, a government check.  It's socialism, and I wish McCain had caught this.

McCain could also have glanced at Limbaugh's page, where we find that 5% of Americans pay 50% of the taxes.  In other words, almost none of us foot the bill for almost all of us.  Since you can't cut taxes on people who don't pay taxes, it's only sensible that any tax cut would be most in favor of that 5%.  And since tax cuts stimulate business and create jobs, which McCain did mention, we should be PROUD of 'tax cuts for the rich', since that results in JOBS and OPPORTUNITIES for the POOR.

watch, listen and understand

Thanks Powerline for the fantastic video.  Just doin' my part.

UPDATE--yet another video killed by YouTube, presumably because it's prejudicial to Obama's campaign.  This is censorship, pure and simple.  If they are to provide a worldwide forum for this sort of presentation and then pick and choose which remain and which are removed, they are censoring public discourse.  And always one way, the leftist way.

political cowardice

every news story I read about this bailout plan says Pelosi won't move ahead without Republican support in the range of 100 votes in the House.

I THOUGHT THE DEMS HAD A MAJORITY IN THE HOUSE.......?

Why on EARTH does she need hundreds of Republican votes to get a bill to the Senate?

This is called "political cover", folks.  If the idea stinks and the plan fails, she simply does not want Democrats to be the only ones who get the blame.  Not only does this show cowardice and lack of the spine needed to do the nation's business, it shows they have NO IDEA WHAT THEY"RE DOING.  They don't know if this will work or not.

So Pelosi wants enough Repubs in the boat that, if it starts sinking, she can share the blame with them and avoid future Democrat calamities in House elections.

What if THERE IS NO HOUSE, NO ELECTIONS, NO FUTURE?

When you see their priorities, you can't help thinking about some kind of TOTAL CONGRESSIONAL RECALL, so we can send 525 people to that house who have courage, backbone and PRINCIPLES.

Obama's 'tax the rich' plan

$250,000.  That is the new dividing line between being rich and 'not rich'.  Obama says anyone above that line essentially has what he needs and can afford to be clipped for socially good reasons.

But that line is probably very near the separation point between typical salaried jobs and entrepreneurship.  LOTS of people who are above that line are there because they TOOK RISKS, started businesses, and these people EMPLOY an awful lot of 'good folks'.

I commented on another blog on this topic, and what I wrote seems unimprovable, at least by ME, so here it is--

*******************************************************

Tax the Rich = wreck jobs, raise interest rates and harm the future for EVERYONE.

When business 'self-limits' because of punitive taxes, afraid to ‘get to the next level’ because the risk of trying outweighs the net reward after new taxes, the self-limiting process necessarily destroys potential new jobs.

Capital expansion, new offices and plants, all that kind of spending is under new and frightening risk/reward scenarios. The risk, which is the same as ever if not worse, now cannot BEGIN to match the reward, because Uncle Barack is poised to snatch the reward away before it even gets into the hands of the risk takers.

When risk is high and reward is low, investors figuratively sit on money, buy gold and bury it in the back yard. In reality they buy CDs and government bonds rather than investing in the kind of venture capital groups this nation is famous for.  Without this capital available for business as loans,  business simply doesn't borrow.  This makes interest rates rise, as banks MUST increase rates in order to remain profitable on fewer loans. Higher rates then mean fewer people can afford family style borrowing for house, car, etc. Remember Carter?  Remember 20% credit rates, 15% mortage rates, the 'malaise' that he blamed on US?

And of course, when self-limiting a business doesn’t work, as it won’t for some businesses, including some banks, the answer is GO OUT OF BUSINESS - which destroys PRESENT jobs as well as future jobs.

Jebus, can’t anyone get this kind of thing on national television? IT ISN”T COMPLICATED.

reality

For those who want to believe the fantasy that Jim Johnson has removed himself from involvement with the Obama campaign, this story should set you straight.

Jim Johnson - former chairman of Fannie Mae, engineered the books to meet goals so that bonuses for executives (him) were triggered, made over $100 million in his tenure with Fannie.  Johnson, interestingly, was also chairman of Lehman Brothers, also bankrupt, caused by the same problems.  Both are being investigated by the FBI at present, and hopefully, like the Enron guys, Johnson will be found guilty of something and be FORCED to give that money back.

Franklin Raines - succeeded Johnson, also made $100 million, booted in 2004 when Fannie's problems became too large to ignore.  Raines also claims no involvement with Obama's campaign, even though the WaPo has written a story about him indicating he took phone calls from Obama seeking advice about finance and the mortgage industry.

Raines, too, should be broke and in jail.  IF there is a God.  :-)

Johnson and Raines, architects of the financial devastation plaguing this nation, are serving as architects of the Obama presidency too.

Great.

Media heebie jeebies....

Yahoo news today reports on a new YouTube video from three years ago.

Apparently, a traveling preacher from Africa was visiting her Pentecostal church and blessed her.

This was at the beginning, I suppose, of her campaign for governor, a few years back.  The preacher blessed her against, among other things, Satan and witchcraft.

Any humble, sensible person would hope and pray that Satan and witchcraft don't have any influence in his or her life.   I certainly hope and pray the same for myself and everyone I love.

But liberal elites consider these matters proof of intellectual inferiority.

Now, if a Dem candidate were to, say, be a Satan WORSHIPPER?  Well, we know that Saul "The Red" Alinsky, Chicago's original community organizer, dedicated his book to Lucifer, affectionately considered by the author to be 'the first radical'.

Michelle Obama, in a stump speech suggesting Barack 'sees the world not as it is but as it should be', was quoting from that book.  And the letter recommending Obama to Harvard was written by a young follower of Alinsky who carried on his work.

Nobody in the media wants to know anything about these lines of inquiry, which lead to Satan in cutesy ways but are deeply alarming in other ways.

But show that Sarah Palin takes her religion seriously enough to believe there is such a thing as witchcraft, evil, a devil, and by golly you've proven she is-- well, just like the vast majority of Americans.

Who, buy the way, are despised by the elites, the media, Barack and Michelle, George Soros and the gang.

It's wonderful to know I am despised.  It certainly clears the air.

I've often said that when you work your way through the details and get down into the weeds regarding the differences between the left and the right, the very bottom line is simple:

On the right, those who believe in God and understand that God wants them to be a certain kind of person.

On the left, those who do not believe in God and who think those who do are STUPID.

No matter the depth and breadth of analysis, no matter the political nuance of this or that issue, the bottom line is the same.

This is the godless versus the Godly.  It's as old as time.  It's the Egyptians vs. Moses and the Hebrews, it's the Philistines vs. David and the Jews.

Nobody knows the full details of God's plan, but one thing is certain; God will not have eternal patience for those who insist on disbelief.  At some point He will deal with them.

Until then, WE have to deal with them.  And their power is growing, not least because of their influence in education of the young and in the media  Like the Islamists, they have a multigenerational plan, and they are not in the least disturbed if they live and die and do not see their plan come to fruition; it's enough to know that some are carrying on.

In Alinsky's case, it's Barack and Michelle.

FINALLY....

I just heard that the AP was reporting FBI investigations of Fannie, Freddie, AIG and Lehman Brothers.

I am confident that I will be disappointed in the outcome, but it's about time someone treated these failures as the crimes they clearly are.

Fannie, at least, involves already identified account-rigging in order to hit bonus levels for top executives.  Their names, I believe, are Jim Johnson and Franklin Raines, and they are Obama campaign advisors, now that they have leisure time for such pursuits, what with their hundred million dollar fortunes and all.

Johnson was even the CEO at Lehman Brothers before he came to Fannie.  This is probably part of the investigation.

Allow me one small breath of hope that Bush has the stones to sic the Justice Dept. on these people, to put someone in jail and to get the money back so the taxpayers won't be so badly stiffed.

Overpaid Dem executives include Jamie Gorelick (what a shock), Johnson, Raines and many others.

AP plays prevent defense

The Associated Press has released a new story about a poll which says 1/3 of Democrats express negative ideas about black people.

We don't really get a mental picture of what the questions were like, how much leading was going on, manipulation, that sort of thing.  And if we did know, we'd probably understand a lot more than we do.

But we know one thing; this poll MUST be real.  It's possible the numbers are even higher than this story indicates.

Because the AP has released this story as a WARNING to Democrats.

"We know you're lying, that you say you'll vote for Obama but you probably won't, because he's black.  WE KNOW.  And we won't let you get away with it.  You'd BETTER vote for Obama.".

It's an attempt to jolt the consciences of the bitter, gun- and bible-clinging people who have 'antipathy toward those who are not like them', as Obama famously said of them in the private zillionaire fundraiser party in San Francisco.

It is also, although well masked, a vague allusion to the notion, 'if Democrats are this racist, imagine how much REPUBLICANS are racist!"

Preventative care, six weeks before the election.  Bringing the wayward blue collar white folks in line.  The AP has distinguished itself again.
